BISON Reveal New Album/Label Details & Plan Canadian Touring Trek; Album Teaser

Bison (formerly Bison B.C.)  recently announced their return after a lengthy hiatus. Now they’re sharing the news that they have signed with Pelagic Records for the release of a new studio album. ‘You Are Not The Ocean You Are The Patient‘ will see release on June 23rd in Europe with a North American release to follow on July 7th. Guitarist/vocalist James Farwell commented of the effort:

“It was important that the songs fit together to tell a bit of a story. A story of a new life and escaping the city, while still being tethered to it. Life is a constant fight, and though I have taken the fight to a more natural and beautiful place, that struggle still persists. This is an album of daily living. It is for everyone.”

Vocalist Dan And added: “The new songs still sound like ‘us,’ whatever that means, but we aren’t concerned with shying away from whatever influences creep up. The older we get and the longer we play together, the less we give a shit about trying to sound like anything in particular.”

HE WHOSE OX IS GORED To Issue ‘Paralyzer’ 7″, Premieres First Official Video; Tour With SAMOTHRACE Starts Next Week

The powerfully concussive ethereal sludge band He Whose Ox Is Gored will unleash their brand new “Paralyzer” seven-inch this weekend via Chain Letter Collective and the band’s own label Void Assault Records. The three song effort was captured by none other than legendary producer Jack Endino (Skinyard, TAD, Windhand, Early Man, etc.) at Avast! Recording Studio (Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Earth, Supersuckers etc.). It contains the new song Paralyzer along with the previously recorded “Buried Twice” and “Void Assault” from the band’s critically-lauded Rumors EP, remixed by the band’s cohorts from Seattle’s Newaxeyes. “Paralyzer” was recorded as part of the ongoing Converse Rubber Tracks sessions which the band shared some comments about saying:

The ‘Paralyzer‘ seven-inch started as a great opportunity presented to us by Converse Rubber Tracks and Jack Endino. We also wanted to find a way to work with our friends in Newaxeyes and a seven-inch came to mind. When Ben and Heather Heywood of Los Angeles’ Chain Letter Collective came on board, it created an opportunity for us to bring it all together.”

Paralyzer” will see official release on June 16th but will be available this Sunday, May 14th at the band’s special event show with Conan, North, and Serial Hawk at Highline on their home turf of Seattle as part of the venue’s seven-year anniversary series. The seven-inch will also be available throughout He Whose Ox Is Gored‘s US tour with Samothrace from May 17th through June 10th. The trek includes performances with Void Omina, Noothgrush, and Graves At Sea on select dates. See all confirmed shows below.

The Bluestone “The Seed” – Album Review & Stream…

The Bluestone

The Seed – CD // DD

Self Released: November 27, 2015

Terry “The Ancient One” Cuyler

Hey all this is The Ancient One inviting you all to listen to a Trio of rockers Marcos (guitarist & vox), Julen (drums & vox) and Jorge (bass) from Madrid, Spain who call themselves The Bluestone. After seeing their video ‘Georgetown’ on YouTube I had to see if I could purchase their music on my favorite music platform Bandcamp, and happily discovered the bands Debut album The Seed was there waiting for me to listen to it.  Yes, this was released back in 2015 but has seemingly flown under the radar.  Until NOW!!

Recorded over 3 days in a small studio I imagine the music had to be done in as few takes as possible, as studio time can be expensive. In a conversation I had with Marcos via private messenger on Facebook I learned that this was done like a live recording. Meaning the band all sits in the studio playing the music rather than being recorded individually then having their parts mixed and mastered by the sound engineer. While some may shrug this off as no big deal, conversely, it IS because that means the band works well together and the listener gets to hear what the band sounds like on stage from the comfort of their headphones in your mom’s basement or in at your House Party. Yep, it’s that diverse!

The Bluestone may call themselves a Grunge band with a delicate progressive taste. But they also add some psychedelic fuzz mixed with Spanish and Arabic guitar playing methods leads me to call them desert  rock especially when I listen to the politically charged ‘Georgetown’. But does genre really matter when the music is good? If you like bands such as Greenleaf or just good ROCK ‘N’ ROLL then I recommend yo purchase The Bluestone’s album The Seed.  Some of my favorite tracks are ‘Faster’, ‘Maybe’, ‘Black Belly’, ‘Georgetown’, and ‘Stoned’.  To quote the band, They call their sound “Pure dirty rock that can make you jump on any stage!!!”

GoatHawkBuffalo “Release The Beast” EP Review & Stream…

Release The Beast – DD // Band Shirt

Burning Tube Records – Released: April 21, 2017

Reviewed by Ric “Suisyko” Dorr

Founded – 2013

Home – Copenhagen, Denmark

Band Members – Vocals: Johan / Guitar: Jacob / Guitar: Asger / Bass: Michael / Drums: Poul

Self described as ‘Sludge Rock’ and citing that they are “Five guys playing heavy rock music. It might get dirty, and it definitely will be loud!” An apt description of this EP that appears to be the first release from this quintet and the four songs seem to represent exactly that; five guys slamming and jamming with hands DEEP in the ‘heavy’ and they are not afraid to use it.

Band Pic

“A split-second of feedback and ‘Love Song lullaby’ rips your face off from the get as the full force of the standard two guitar/bass/drums and a ripping vocal takes hold and MAKES you move with a pure rock-n-roll edict rolls forth setting the bar for this EP and as the fury grows towards the end of this first track, you have been primed and should be ready for more!!”  ‘Dirty Filthy Names’ opens with a staggered drum-line that leads right into the double staccato attack that opens and gets even ‘uglier’ in the best way possible as the darkness shines through with every stop/start that flows all the way through to the last section when the speed picks up and rips along to the end. ‘Mirror Queens’ has an even faster intro with clean guitar notes taking us along for the ride of power chords and slamming drums/bass before that voice tears through the dust to take control of this tale of rage. ‘Wanted Man’ opens with a slower, more relaxed beginning that belies that these guys are capable of much more than just a ‘party-band’ approach and the clean note intro serves up a tale of “Take it back…” that begins this story. Being the longest song on the release, it stands out to me as the one that they took the time to show off their skill-set and shines as the perfect book-end and when it gets thick and heavy again at 2:45 in, it is exactly the perfect shift and allows each member to show ‘what they have’.

If this is any indication of what these guys have waiting in the wings, then the world is in for a major treat!! Buy this EP right off, share it with everybody you know, support ’em live if they come anywhere near you and turn it up LOUD!!

Beastmaker “Inside The Skull” Album Review & Music Video…

Beastmaker

Inside the Skull – Vinyl // CD // DD

Rise Above Records – Release Date: May 19th, 2017

Reviewed by Santiago “Chags” Gutierrez

“Do you believe that someone out of the past – someone dead – can enter and take possession of a living being?” This is certainly an intriguing question asked by the character of Gavin in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, Vertigo. When pertaining to Beastmaker, the answer is a wholehearted YES! Beastmaker seem possessed by early Black Sabbath and other similar vintage doom rock from the past. These Californians have invoked those spirits to produce, what is in my book, a top ten contender for 2017.

Live band Pic

Beastmaker recorded Inside the Skull in three days. Andres Alejandro Saldate (drums) mixed and mastered while Trevor William Church (guitars/vocals) engineered. The band is rounded off by John Tucker (bass). Johanna Sadonis from Lucifer lends her unmistakable voice to “Heaven to Hell” and “Now Howls the Beast”. Knate from Salem’s Pot also makes a guest appearance. His contribution seamless given his track record with Salem’s Pot.

Church relates that the album was inspired by a myriad of topics. The base of the inspiration coming from horror movies such as Tomb of the Blind Dead. Thriller and suspense literature and movies such as the previously mentioned Vertigo by Hitchcock, and a distaste for organized religion were also cited as influences. The simple, yet effective, album cover was rendered by Branca Studios and perfectly conveys the contents therein. All ten tracks purveying a hauntingly doomy background to their style of old vintage metal.

Opening number “Evil One” initiates the proceedings with a wonderful doomy riff that drives the song along at a brisk pace. Album closer “Sick Sick Demon” bookending the album in much the same way. “Heaven to Hell” is a more varied track that ebbs and flows with its tempos. “Now Howls the Beast” and “Inside the Skull” feature some impressive solos. “Nature of the Damned” and “Psychic Visions” providing a mid-tempo that keeps things varied enough to create a dynamic album.

Beastmaker has created a memorable doom rock album with vintage overtones that does not disappoint. Inside the Skull is due to release on May 19th via Rise Above Records. Yes, Rise Above, so you pretty much know what is in store. It’s the perfect label for this band. They will be touring in May and June with Zakk Sabbath, so catch them live if you can. Now, in the words of the character Madeleine from Vertigo, “there is something I must do.” So, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll take another listen (or two) to this one.

Hey all this is Terry The Ancient One and I’d  like to tell all you doomophiles out there about  Return of the Black Butterflies, by the Funeral Doom Metalers Red Moon Architect.  Founded in  Kouvola, Finland  in 2011, Return of the Black Butterflies will be Red Moon Architect’s 3rd album.  It also will bring a big change for the band with their new vocalist formerly of Casket Ville Rutanen. While the departure of  Juuso Turkki  must have been difficult for the band, I am certain long time fans and those who have never heard of  Red Moon Architect are getting a great album.

Pro Band Pic

Red Moon Architect  fearlessly uses musical contrast with crushing doom and sweeping melodies to creates a sense of drama in their music. Opening with ‘The Haunt’ drummer/keyboardist Saku Moilanen sets the mood for the entire album with a haunting keyboard instrumental that transports the listeners to what to me feels like the wind swept icy Steppes where the icy winds and chilling howling winds have driven men mad. Following his keyboard lead in, Saku takes up his 2nd job as drummer with guitarist Matais Moilanen and bassist Jukka Jauhiainen to bring Ville Rutanen with vocals that sound like they come from the depths of Hell which are at times complimented by chilling doom riffs.  At other times tracks are contrasted by somber melodies that compliment  the haunting vocals of  Anni Viljanen’s. I really have a difficult time picking any songs as favorites from this majestic album.  They all sort of blend into one another making this one of those albums that I believe must be listened to in it’s entirety.  Set to be released May, 19th,2017  Red Moon Architect’s  Return of the Black Butterflies is now available for pre-order.

Synth-Wave Project ARCADEA (Featuring Mastodon’s Brann Dailor & Withered’s Raheem Amlani) Share Debut’s Details; Stream Song

As other members of Mastodon have actively stepped into involvements in outside projects like Troy Sanders (Killer Be Killed, Gone Is Gone) or Brent Hinds (West End Motel, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra), drummer Brann Dailor has now followed suit. Arcadea was born when Brann Dailor teamed up with upside-down guitarist and keyboardist Core Atoms (Zruda) to create a synth-laden progressive, heavy psych band. The duo soon added guitarist Raheem Amlani (Withered) on synth and the three recorded their synth odyssey outing at Orange Peel Studios in Atlanta, GA.

June 16th will see the worldwide release of Arcadea‘s self-titled debut album on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records. It was mastered by Colin Leonard and features cover art from renowned sci-fi fantasy artist Essy May. Today we are sharing the audio-only stream of a song from the album titled ‘Infinite End‘ below.
