History:
“American Dream” is LCD’s first studio album in seven years. (The last was 2010’s This is Happening.) This is also a reunion album after the split in April of 2011 after their farewell concert at Madison Square Garden.

LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden, NYC in 2011

American Dream is the second longest studio album by the band. It is also the most polished sounding of the band’s releases. “The album’s lyrics deal with depression, social issues, fear, and ending of friendship and love.” The sound is also is a mix of Dance, Disco, New Wave, Punk, Synthpop, and Rock. (Like a mix of their past albums with a refinement of the sound mixture that James has since made his own)

Track-by-track:

“Oh Baby” – Starts off with a constant metallic clang and layers are slowly added in, like drums and a bass synth, after a minute we get the first words. “Oh Baby” despite up tempo beats the song becomes melancholy. He asked to be awakened by his lover.

“Other Voices” – This track is very Talking Heads-y; the bass line is very funky. “Your still a pushover for passionate people” is one of the phrases that is repeated throughout the track

“I Used To” – Is another Talking heads sounding song.

“Change Yr Mind” – A strange mix of some industrial sounding beats a dance bass, the bellowing of an out-of-tune guitar tones and post-punk vocal delivery.

“How Do You Sleep?” – A drum pattern and arpeggiated synth make this song a dreamscape with the vocals a little more drawn out with an almost loud howling from the distance.  This track has a different vocal cadence and that is varied from James Murphy’s normal flow.  As the track progresses so do the layers build to another dance freak-out.

“Tonite” (My favorite song) – Now for the Grammy winning song… We get an 80s bass synth. The song has a very Giorgio Moroder sound.

“Call the Police” – This has a dream pop feel to it and it was also the first single.

“American Dream” – This also has a dream pop feel to it.

“Emotional Haircut” – Has a post-punk feel to it.

“Black Screen” – Is a mostly ambient track with vocoded vocals.

“Pulse (v.1)” – Is an instrumental that wouldn’t sound out of place on 45:33

Final Thoughts:

This album is my favorite from the band. It is a mixture of everything James has done in past albums and polished it to what I feel is the perfect example of what LCD Soundsystem is… Everything is here, the rhythms, the hits, the experimentation, heartfelt lyrics. So if this is your first exposure to the band this album is a great place to start.

Review:

The first time I heard Murder Love God, was a few months after we had gone to see Milwaukee’s own LOCKJAW for the fourth or fifth time and Medavon had shared an advance with my wife of an album he was working on. While listening, the first thing we noticed was that the feel was even darker and deeper as Medavon was perfecting the blue print for the style known as “Hell Rock”, a mixture of all parts industrial/rock/electronica with a twist of trip-hop thrown in. When recently asked to describe the ethos behind Murder Love God, Medavon replied,

“Undefined and unexplained pieces of rotting parts floating down the sewer to a destination unknown. Excessive thoughts and complaints portrayed through music from a sometimes twisted perspective. These fragments are broken and often bitter but hopefully a few will find them comforting or entertaining.” Each previous release, including the remix’s have been pretty incredible in their own right and hinted at ‘something more’ looming in the shadows, and with this EP, that ‘more’ is finally revealed for the masses. Five tracks, 22+ minutes and this one was released as ‘parts’ over the course of the beginning of this year, coming together as an EP released on 7-4-17.

Live Band Pic

Opener ‘Bipolar’ comes right out of the gate with that familiar staggered tempo that grabs your attention and refuses to let go as the stark-dark twists around you immediately as you grasp onto the consuming keys that seem to linger just out of reach and still, right there as Medavon’s ethereal vocals seem to come at you from all directions as you grab every letter of every word that flows forth and as the body falls into disarray as the song itself, and everything else winds to… nothing.

‘Can’t Look Away’ opens with a slightly faster tempo and Medavon busts right into a rapid-fire vocal that to my ears is a new twist that rides the cascades of ghostly guitar tones delivered with a  surgical precision that gives the body of this track the added feature of ‘plush’ that has never entered the MLG camp in such a manner and even the harmonics mixed with the pick-slides are an indulgence that fills the air to an even higher level of ‘completeness’ to make this one of the most concise songs to come from Medavon’s hand yet.

And then comes ‘Fire Walker’, the longest song contained on this offering and is the pick for the video teaser. This is the exact song to give a complete smattering of the flavors contained here in and shows the growth and purity that musically demonstrates a confidence earned and a maturity in the arrangements and running order that were there before, but not quite to the level that this release is burning with. ‘Cannibal’ is even more of the progressions that while natural, seem second nature here flavored expertly with the seasonings of the life-blood of…

Band Pic 2

Standout track on this one for ME, is the closer ‘Devil’s Favorite’. Shortest offering included, it has everything I look for and devour greedily from a Medavon composition; a relentless beat, full bodied and driving and that special lyrical twist given as only he can do with flair and rage all given with the roar of the master-purveyor of Hell-Rock, delivering with “To taste it, don’t waste it, just touch the sky and shake it…” and the tone is one of need as you have to run along to savor each drop of this glass of absinthe-stained tears to the very last.  If it doesn’t hit you between the eyes once you have traversed from first note to last, Medavon has a response for that as well…

“That is acceptable….my comfort is failed and my soul has been sacrificed by desire. Please enjoy my testimony.” Listen once, drink deep from his veins as he has poured them once more into his art and feel it flow through you… “A musical acid trip on the industrial tip.” he said.

If this is your first sample of, then by all means GET IT ALL like, YESTERDAY!! If you are already one of the ‘aware’, add this to your library and share it with ALL in your personal realm. Support them live if you are given the chance, and keep it LOUD!!

The Interbeing “Among The Amorphous” Album Review + Stream…

The Interbeing

Among the Amorphous – Vinyl // CD // DD // Signed Merch

Long Branch Records / Prime Collective – released June 23rd 2017

Reviewed by Terry “The Ancient One” Cuyler

A couple days ago my friend Brett Windnage of Lascaille’s Shroud and Soulmass posted a link to a video by a band of Danish Metalers from Copenhagen that I had never heard of called The Interbeing. After reading his post telling people how the band had crowdfunded it’s latest album Among the Amorphous through a kickstarter and spent two years making it I kinda felt the music merited a listen. So I cranked my speakers to 11, clicked my mouse on the YouTube link and enlarged the screen to full size and WHAMO!!  My ears were filled with futuristic tech metal and an amazing Sci-Fi themed Music Video to introduce their new album.

For those who are unfamiliar with The Interbeing, the band’s origins began in 2001 with a shared vision of founding members – vocalist Dara Toibin, guitarist Torben Pedersen and bassist Jacob Hansen to create a metal band with an innovative sound influenced by several genres. It was in 2006 that the band started to truly develop their sound with the addition of guitarist and electronic sound master Boas Segal and percussionist Kristoffer Egefelt whose technical skill helped The Interbeing seize a place for themselves in Denmark’s metal scene with the release of its demo Perceptual Confusion. Since their formation The Interbeing has been nominated for the 2008 ‘Talent of the Year’ award at the Danish Metal Awards and Band of the week on Bandbase.dk.

In 2010, The Interbeing won the Best Metal Act at the Underground Music Awards and the Royal Metal Grand Prix. Then they slammed into the Danish Metal scene with their first full album Edge of the Obscure in 2011 which received much acclaim in Denmark’s music magazine GAFFA as album of the year.  Not being too familiar with The Interbeing myself and with my distrust of media hype, I decided to give the band’s past releases a listen on Bandcamp and I believe I can say with certainty I will being buying their past albums as well.

Pro band pic

The Interbeing’s latest album Among the Amorphous is a masterful blending of metal, with bellicose hardcore vocals and breakdowns, moving clear vocals in the choruses throughout that hearken back to good old fashioned power metal, with ethereal synthesizer movements and heavy dub beats. Listening to Among the Amorphous on my headphones feels rather like being in the Animated movies Akira or Ghost in the Shell. The band’s musicianship is tight.  The songs that stand out the most for me are ‘Deceptive Signal,’ ‘Purge the Deviant,’ and ‘Sum of Singularity.’  That said, I suggest you listen to it in it’s entirety than to single songs as this is an amazing Progressive Concept Album!  Highly Recommend!

Collide “Color of Nothing” Album Review + Stream…

COLLIDE

Color Of Nothing – CD // DD

Self Released + Crowdfunded – released May 25, 2017

Album Reviewed by Ric “Suisyko” Dorr

Formed – 1992

LocationLos Angeles, California USA

MemberskaRIN – vox / Statik – sounds

Previous Releases – “Beneath The Skin” (1996), “Distort” remix collection (1998), “Chasing The Ghost (2000), “Some Kind Of Strange” (2003), “Vortex” remix collection (2004), “Like The Hunted” DVD/Live CD (2005), “Two Headed Monster” (2008), “These Eyes Before” (2009), “Counting To Zero” (2011), “Bent And Broken” (2012)

COLLIDE is a duo founded in 1992 incorporating elements of electronica, trip hop and synth-pop combined with a darker edge to create something esoteric in nature and ethereal in execution, delivering a hybrid that is like nothing before. They have worked with artists of the highest esteem during their existence including the likes of Charlie Clouser, Dean Garcia (CURVE) and Danny Carey (TOOL), and they keep pumping out their own flavor of music to the masses.

“Color Of Nothing” is the first offering in almost five years and kaRIN and Statik decided this time out to fund the album publicly, citing this move as a way to gauge if anyone still cared… with this release, the answer is a resounding YES and the result is amazing!!

Promo Pic

Eleven tracks clocking in at just over an hour, this collection of songs represents the BEST yet to come from this powerhouse and shows they are in top form and ready to take their place in your library. From the opening track ‘Wake Up’ through to closer ‘Pale Blue’, the edge is right there with all the ‘fixings’ to make this a feast for your auditory senses, including twists and turns to keep you moving all along. Flavorings of bands like KMFDM and MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT are sprinkled throughout with a splash here and there of LORDS OF ACID type progressions all serving kaRIN’s existential voice that cuts through with razor-precision and hits you between the eyes with her haunting delivery. ‘Soul Crush’ is a great example as she reminds us that “We are all human” in her signature siren-song voice.

‘Fix’ shines extra bright for ME, as the standout track from this album. Soft and slow for the first 40 seconds before the drum line hits between your eyes and then kaRIN grabs hold and drags you along, willingly through the guitar lines and floating hypnotic melody of the rest of the body of the song.  Even as drum fills jump out at you here and there, making the flow seamless as you traverse along Statik’s masterful arrangement. I could go on and on about each track here as they are each as strong as every other composition brought together here, but the BEST way for you to understand this record is to go GET IT, share it with every pair of ears you come across.  Support Collide in the live format if you are blessed with the opportunity and most importantly, keep it LOUD!!
