Review:

Arcadian Child are a rock band from Limassol, Cyprus, Greece and this album is the debut release by the band.

This album is a great blend of Classic Rock influences, Modern Rock, and little sprinkles of psychedelia. Musically they remind me of Wolfmother and those other “modern classic” rock bands like The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, (1990s) Divinyls and many others that continued writing and performing music as if it were still the late 70s.

That “modern classic” style started in the early 90s and continued into the new millennium. (With some bands still carrying the torch, like Arcadian Child. Even the track-listing is set up for a vinyl release (if the right people get a hold of the rights. Which they totally should…)

Track-by-Track:

She’s On My Mind 02:56 – This is a great track to start the album with, and in my case, it is a track that will stick in your head for days afterwards. If it weren’t for the effects used on the tracks this track could be from the 70s. The music video is a trip as well.

Little Late For Love 04:16 – This track works great as a cool down from the first high energy track. It is more chill but it still is an experience though, there are spots were they compress and pan the music during instrumental parts. This track also has more of a groove than the first.

Rabbit Hole 03:54 (Favorite track) – Here they bring their psychedelic influences in a little more. They take their time to set up the world of the song with slow strumming of the guitar and after a few seconds they introduce the drums and vocals. The lyrics are especially in that vein; “How deep can you go? Can you trick your mind? Are you deep in the zone? Can you deceive your soul? Would you walk bare footed at the edge of the unknown?”

Electric Red 02:51 – In this song we go back to a harder rocking track, reminding me a little of King Crimson’s Red. I feel like this track is miss titled and should have been called Don’t Ask Me Why.

Irresistible 03:15 – This is a much darker track, lyrically, than the first four. With lyrics like; “Down the broken road, You will find us all, Don’t caress their hopes, Love our absent soul” and “Solemnly abide, To all that make you smile, All things in between, Burn in melting ice” Musically it is similar to Rabbit Hole.

Run 04:54 – This song has a very 90s alternative feel and I cannot quite place why. It might be the simple repeated riffs or the affects used of the vocals as flange-y sounding guitars.

Afterglow 03:39 – Back to a hard rocker but still holding on to that 90’s feel. Maybe because of how the lyrics are set up; “You make me feel like the only man alive, Loved and caressed by your controlling lies, Addicted and free, I’m certainly involved, You make me feel like an empty broken soul”

Used 03:47 – We are left on a slow burn of a song that rounds out the album well. It sounds like they mix together a good chunk of the aforementioned influences. There is Rock, psychedelic, modern rock and a good solo.

Final Thoughts:
For some reason it sounds like there are tracks missing or maybe it is just that I want more… I’ll be keeping my eye on this band. Hopefully they continue this trend on their next release.  If you are in the mood for some modern rock with that classic and psychedelic feel you should definitely pick this album up!

Review:

Deaf Radio are a Post-Punk/Alternative/Hard Rock band from Athens, Greece. On their Bandcamp they describe themselves as “a rock quartet inspired by the independent rock music scene.”

Track-by-track Breakdown:

Aggravation – This track launches us into what we will hear on and off for the rest of this of this album. Rockin’ riffs and lyrics that sound like they are from the late 90’s revival of Punk music.

Backseats – This song starts of slow with a repetitive strumming and builds up with quick little riffs interspersed between the delivery of lyrics. In the final two minutes it introduces some screaming in the background making the song harsh. It reminds me of a We Are Harlot song that I cannot remember the name of.

Vultures & Killers – Here we get another change where their Post-Punk influences come out again and we hear a mid tempo beat with some almost falsetto vocals.

Anytime – (Don’t get too mad at this analogy but) this is their Lana Del Rey song minus the orchestra. It is a slow drug filled atmospheric falsetto vocals (like the last track) until the last minute and the music picks up speed and returns back to the Hard Rock that we have heard so far.

Flowerhead – This song is a lot like Vultures & Killers, almost like it is a continuation or sequel to it. They are structure similar and the vocals are sung in the same way. The exception is this one is heavier on the bass and heart monitor beeping in between bass notes.

Revolving Doors – Here we return to a style close to Aggravation, which reminds me of some of Rise Against’s music. A repeating structure with it being changed in the last minute or two.

Trapped – This song reminds me of a mix of Bush and Muse types of playing and singing. The guitar almost sounds surf like with it’s reverb. The tempo and rhythm change a bunch in this song the music goes back and forth between the types we have heard in the songs before it but it isn’t disorienting.

Oceanic Feeling – This song begins with a simple drum pattern that changes to signal the reverb guitar and bass to kick in. We return to backseats but a slower version of it.

…And We Just Pressed The Alarm Button (Favorite track) – Here we return to the Bush/Muse mix.

The band reminds me stylistically of early Rise Against and Queens of the Stone Age with a good mix of 90’s Hard Rock with Punk influences. Panos reminds me of a mix of the two singers as well. The main guitar reminds me of music that I used to listen to a lot but I cannot pinpoint from what. The bass is one of my favorite parts of the music, especially when it is alone, Antonis just goes at it without it going on too long, making me want more.

This album is good for playing in your car (on the verge of too loud) on your way to work or wherever (which is how I’ve listened to it). It is heavy but not too heavy to add to road rage and is chill enough to kind of zone out and relax to.  In essence, Deaf Radio have given us a 1-Stop-Shop with “Alarm”.  This band has a very bright future!!  Highly Recommend!!

Green Yeti “Desert Snow” – Album Review & Stream…

Green Yeti

Desert Show – Vinyl // DD

Cursed Tongue Records – released: April 21, 2017

Reviewed by Santiago “Chags” Gutierrez

What does the name Green Yeti conjure up in your mind? Possibly a rampaging stoned out abominable snowman rampaging along the Himalayan mountainside? That is what came to mind when I first heard the name. Green Yeti is, in reality, a very competent three-piece stoner band from Athens, Greece – stoner green and as heavy as that famous fictitious beast wreaking havoc in the snow. Desert Show is the bands second release and admittedly, this is my first exposure to the sludgy, psyched out sounds this band creates. The band features members from Brotherhood of Sleep, Reversed Nature, and Stonenrow and consists of Dani Avramidis on bass, Mike Andresakis on guitar and vocals, and Giannis Koutroubis on drums.

Band Pic

Desert Show consists of five tracks, but it is far from an EP due to some lengthy, yet intriguing song structures. The album opens up with “Black Planets part 1” and “Black Planets part 2”. Musically these tracks are varied enough to constitute a separation of tracks, yet lyrically, they follow a similar theme. The album closes out with “Bad Sleep part 1” and “Bad Sleep part 2” which follows a similar set up to “Black Planets”. “Black Planets (part one)” is a great way to open the record. It’s hard driving stoner rock with a style that makes you take notice and sets them just that much apart from others who frequent that genre. What additionally stands out are the lyrics. There is something more substantial going on here. They seem to tell a story, yet are still open to interpretation. Which brings me to “Rojo”. Sung entirely in Spanish, this track reads like a poem. The chorus of “vuelve a la vida y matame junto al mar” simply strikes a chord. Musically it ebbs and flows much like a poem. Guitar and bass complementing each other throughout.

Green Yeti play a blend of stoner rock that is all their own, and in this saturated age of the genre, they are discernibly a welcomed addition. They have crafted an album that keeps your attention with subtle nuances and extended riffs that guide you along the journey while lyrically keeping things interesting. Don’t let that album cover fool you, this isn’t quite your typical stoner rock record, so dive in and enjoy.
