LLNN & WOVOKA ‘Marks/Traces’ Split Review & Full Stream

LLNN/WOVOKA
Split – CD//Vinyl
Pelagic Records – Relase Date: June 16th, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

LLNN’s and WOVOK’s Marks/Traces split will see release June 16th via Pelagic Records on CD, LP, and digital formats. It remains to be seen if the planet’s fans of atmospherically dense, crushing doom heaviness are able to withstand this bleakly oppressive effort. The seven song Split sees Copenhagen, Denmark’s LLNN contributing six of those selections while Los Angeles, California’s WOVOKA add one rather lengthy number themselves. But it is the results that matter here I suppose and in this case, those are impressive…perhaps depressive too for some but either way, this is textural doom in all of it’s glorious greatness.

The beginning of the Split does so with the superb LLNN track ‘The Guardian‘, a melding of post-hardcore and noise rock with obvious doom and metallic overtones. The track’s rhythmic, pattern-like pulses act like a slow-grooving juggernaut rendering all before it asunder. Tribal drumming and intermittent walls of sound host the acidic vocalizations that permeate the song. Subsequent cuts like ‘Swarms’ and the blast furnace ferociousness of ‘Engineer Of Ire‘ only drag you further downward into the mire of this sludgened bog. The stand-out content provided by LLNN definitely is delivered in the back-to-backs tracks ‘Nostromo Falls‘, ‘Eye Of The Covenant‘ and ‘Gravitated‘. The latter one an instrumental delivering a slow deluge of electronica, rumbling undercurrents of bottom-end heaviness and shadowy, eerie vibes altogether. There are haunting vocal chants that remain ethereal and quite ghostly as well.

Traces‘ is WOVOKA‘s one lone, long-playing selections at over seventeen minutes playing time. After a brief intro piece, a barrage of molasses-molded riffs, skull crushing rhythms and drums driven by what sounds like axehandle-hewn strikes arrive. Hellish, anguished vocals cascade from within the cacophony, flowing across turbulent tempos and resting harshly upon your soul. Everything feels as if it is gradually increasing, building ever so subtly like a slow rising tide that will eventually overcome you..and it does. Aggressive transmittances ebb and flow, rise and crash within this swirl of tidal tonality until a break point is reached. From it, things settle into a less chaotic state as some massive bass lines and tightly wound drums take the reigns. Eventually they are accompanied by some intriguing, emotionally-enhanced clean vocals as the cut takes on a more definitive alternative, almost showgaze-y styling of post-rock content.

The pairing of these two bands on this Split from Pelagic Records is an ideally intelligent move. Both LLNN and WOVOKA work well in complimenting each others’ contribution. While there’s currently just a track from each band above (a press promo copy of the album was used for this review), it is more than enough for you to fathom exactly what we are dealing with here. ‘Marks/Traces‘ is a volatile offering that is simultaneously dangerous and daring for all the parties involved..them, you, me, us..everyone. See all ordering links below.

LETHAL AFFECTION Debuts ‘Frozen In Time’ Official Video

The New Jersey melodic metal collective Lethal Affection have issued their brand new Official Video for the song ‘Frozen In Time‘. The single appears on the band’s upcoming full-length album “Choose A Side” due out this fall. “Choose A Side” was recorded at Conclave Studios in Manhattan, produced by Corey Pierce of God Forbid, and mixed by Christopher “Zeuss” Harris.

The band was founded five years ago in New Brunswick, N.J. by guitarists Joe Percario and Nick Kashmanian who were then joined by lead vocalist Noah Simon. Soon, the missing piece was added when drummer Cameron Rozell came on board and this high-energy metal outfit was set into motion. Structured with shredding guitar, heavy grooves, and operatic vocals, Lethal Affection have created a powerfully appealing body of work. This new video clip, as well as its Lyric Video predecessor, ‘Taste Of Anarchy‘ (streaming below) do well in establishing the band’s fierce technicality.

Make sure to check out Lethal Affection live.  More shows will be announced soon!

VERMILION WHISKEY Issue ‘Come Find Me’ Lyric Video

Southern Louisiana’s even more southerner hard rockers Vermilion Whiskey have just offered their latest batch of their finest distilled rock ‘n roll for our consumption. The band’s new Official Lyric Video for their track ‘Come Find Me‘ is fermented and aged with righteous riffery and intoxicating rhythms. With vocals drenched in soulful tones and intensely inflected emotion, the song is a fine representation of that inebriating elixer that is Vermilion Whiskey.

If you are so late to the party that you still have not picked up the band’s blues ‘n boozy collection of tunes on ‘Spirit Of Tradition‘ (out now!) then shame on you. It’s blue collar rock through and through as the fine example above, ‘Come Find Me‘, goes down so smoothly when consumed responsibly.

PHE Self-Titled Review, Stream & NYP Item

PHE
S/T – DD
Self-Release – Release Date: June 2, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

From Helmond, Netherlands we have the arrival of a hereunto somewhat secret trio Phe and their just-issued 5-song self-titled album. Secret or not, the cat (or PHEline) is out of the bag with this debut and whatta cat this is! Constructed upon all of the prerequisite fundamentals and components that make Stoner Rock the substantive treasure it is, the musical realms explored on Phe are quite diverse. Sure, it is all deeply rooted in the basics of heavy rock but the boys add in ample amounts of blues, fuzz, alternative and more into this stunning effort.

Things roll out off the line with the heavy stomp of ‘Heaven’s Hell‘, immediately finding an open-ended groove while a tight-knit rhythm section anchors things into place. Fuzzy riffs reverberate as a bit of husky, well-graveled vocals join the movement. We all ride this circuit together until things power down some toward the mid-section for a bit of stripped down vocals with bass and drum accompaniment. ‘Hide‘ begins with a much doomier introduction, a slow churn of guitar, bass and drums before yielding to to a minimalist amount of music during the verses. Reaching an almost hypnotic pattern at times while the vocals switch from melodic and airy to angst-y and intense.

Effect-laden guitars unfurl the middle-marking point of this album, ‘Grow Old‘, before they merge with the others for another intoxicating rhythmic ride. It pulsates and ripples before going off the rails during the amped up choruses while heady vocals do their thing. Those choruses become huge walls of sound where a frenzied delivery rages ever so briefly before powering down back to the melodic verses. In fact, the fourth song’s title sort of describes this best, ‘Rage Down‘. Ethereal bass lines reverberate as an equally airy type of vocal combine with its desert rock music for a bit of a progressive feel to the track itself. Then we arrive at my favorite song of the five, the album-closing ‘Up On The Mountain‘, a track chock full of stoner grit. It combines that grit with a bit of a gothic doom feel while providing some of the burliest riffs yet. A brief pause in the music becomes the shove off point for a fantastic jam session that ultimately ends this fine song and PHEnomenal outing.

VALLENFYRE Issues ‘The Merciless Tide’ Official Video

The crushing, deathly doom band Vallenfyre, which features members of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride members, has unleashed a new official video. The clip is for the track ‘The Merciless Tide‘ from the band’s just-released third album, “Fear Those Who Fear Him”, which came out on June 2nd from Century Media Records. The band Vallenfyre is the brainchild of Paradise Lost guitarist Gregor Mackintosh who is joined by guitarist/bassist Hamish Glencross (ex-My Dying Bride) and drummer Waltteri Väyrynen.

Mackintosh spoke about the new song and video saying:”‘The Merciless Tide‘ is about the relentless march of time and also wishing you could be in someone else’s shoes to save them suffering. In the video, we see a man going through immense suffering over a long period of time, never being able to grasp the things he craves, whilst faceless tormentors observe in indifference. This is incredibly grim, so enjoy.”

Fear Those Who Fear Him‘ was once again produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Nails) at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts and mastered by Brad Boatright (Obituary, YOB, Beastmilk) at Audiosiege Mastering in Portland, Oregon. The cover artwork was created by Hal Rotter.

“Fear Those Who Fear Him” was released as gatefold LP+CD on limited colored and regular black 180-gram vinyl, as special edition digipak (international version), jewelcase CD (Canada, USA, Mexico only) and on all digital/streaming platforms.

The Merciless Tide‘ is the latest visualizer from Vallenfyre and follows the previously issued ‘An Apathetic Grave‘ Lyric Vido and ‘Kill Your Masters‘ Official Video, both are streaming below.

BARONESS Shares Rehearsal Videos With New Guitarist

Just days after announcing their amicable split with guitarist Pete Adams here, progressive metallers Baroness have given us a proper introduction to their newest member, Gina Gleason. That introduction to the new guitarist is being made via two rehearsal room video clips for the songs ‘Chlorine And Wine‘ and ‘Morningstar‘. It goes without saying that Gina is, or must be, an incredibly talented player to have so readily stepped into the Baroness spotlight at this time. Plus, she is also adding a new element to the beloved act…female vocal parts. The band’s well respected, revered status within the metal/music community is enough to put the sensation of pressure on anyone but she seems to be right at home in the insightful peeks below. Judge for yourself…
