LÂMINA ‘Lilith’ Review & Stream

LÂMINA
Lilith – DD
Raging Planet Records – Release Date: June 2, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

From one of planet Earth’s ongoing hotbeds of psyche-infused heavy rock, Portugal, comes the 7-song ‘Lilith‘ debut from LÂMINA. Just released this past Friday, June 2nd, LÂMINA are poised to make their mark upon the global underground music scene with this release. With the quartet of Vasco Duarte, Katari, Evil and Filipe Homem Fonseca fueling the music upon this effort, what they’ve crafted is an energetic, enthralling entrance into another world. That world is a musical realm where hazy, lysergic hard rock melds with desert and grunge elements to render a powerful introduction to LÂMINA.

The diversity of music and genres explored on ‘Lilith‘ is an impressive example of the band’s ability to move within their music with cohesion and fluidity. From the heavily riff-driven opening song ‘Cold Blood‘ there is an underlying sense of urgency rippling within this cool tune itself. The band keeps things tight knit and moving at every twist and turn, up to a point where they delve into some headier aspects of the psyche-tinted variety. Explorations like that are rampant on subsequent tracks like ‘Maze‘ and ‘In The Warmth Of Lilith‘, especially the former as ‘Maze’ is a 20 minute plus excursion into otherworldly awesomeness.

But perhaps your tastes appreciate the heavier side of things and there is an abundance of such here. Just check out such stellar songs as ‘Big Black Angel‘, ‘Evil Rising‘ or ‘Education For Death‘. In fact, you should just go and check out the entire LÂMINALilith‘ album via the Bandcamp embed below. Once there, you can reap the added bonus of it currently being available as a FREE download so it is truly a win-win for you (us) in every way.

BØG ‘JIM’ Review & Stream

BØG
JIM – CD//DD
Self-Release – Release Date: June 10, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

Having just celebrated their third year of existence in April, what better time for BØG to release a new studio offering than right now, huh? Well, that’s exactly what the Melbourne, Australia-based trio of bassist/vox Dain Fewings, drummer/vox Eric Stone and guitarist/vox Tim Jacka are preparing to do. The 5-song ‘JIM‘ will be unleashed on June 10th and when I say “unleashed”, that is exactly what I mean. See, JIM is a humongous beast of a release, a densely crushing recording where terms like volatile or savagery just scratch the surface of this thing’s overall heaviness.

The trio of BØG meld some diverse elements into their music on this outing, everything from sludge, doom, and death metal to ambient, atmospheric and psychedelia. There is an underlying hellishness to the content, a deep darkness that permeates it while channeling a sense of bleak despair. Those elements are solidly represented during the opening cut, ‘Original Hate‘, as a veritable locomotive-like slow groove churns things along. Tortured, acidic vocals, occasionally guttural ones too, navigate the music and at nearly ten minutes in length, there’s some places to explore.

Exploration sums things up nicely when referring to the haunting, heady songs  ‘Fractured‘ and ‘Warm Smell Of The Dredge‘. Both seem somewhat minimalist but these are cases where less truly is more as trippy psyche nuances flow throughout the semi-funeral doom styling of the songs. I keep finding myself reminded of the genre classification “Outersound” that my friends in Swallow The Sky turned me on to last year. The music of BØG is most definitely that of the outersound nature and it does not get more outer there than ‘Siding With King Mort‘ and ‘Peat For Scars‘. These pair of back-to-back album ending tracks are two of the more experimental ones here with the former, ‘Siding With King Mort‘, being my favorite of the five.

Bludgeoning brutality with pummeling punishment derived from a truly sonic-based battery, BØG absolutely embodies such in their music. It’s relentless and constantly crushing you beneath its compacted weight, like the mass-condensing ability of a black hole. BØG are like an aural quicksand that you cannot escape from, they pull you inward and under their amplified mire. Be you doomed or damned, ‘JIM‘ is one hell of a way to go. Here’s your chance to stream it in full below…if you dare.

So much of our career as a band has been following our instincts and running headlong into the unknown with no regard for how insane a tour/show/song idea might be. I feel like that passion & willingness to take a risk has gotten us very far. Naturally, though, you’re walking a tightrope. Same goes for your personal life with romance or substances, etc. Passion and heart will take you everywhere but where’s the line? I was trying to investigate that feeling.

GREEN DEATH Drops ‘Pure Torture’ EP; Streams New Song

One of the best rising acts within the underground metal scene is the Des Moines, Iowa-based Green Death. The crossover thrash band’s new EP, Pure Torture, was released yesterday (June 2nd) through longtime Megadeth bassist David Ellefson’s label, EMP Label Group. To celebrate, the band is streaming the EP’s closing track “Sickle & Scythe”.

Vocalist Sol Bates commented on why this particular song was selected to share with fans saying: “‘Sickle & Scythe’ is the darkest song we have written to date. Lyrically it deals with blind faith, cult practices and death. The song is also meant to take the listener on a journey of our musical direction from our past albums to the next full-length album: We start out with more of a thrash style, then the middle/chorus gets into more death metal, ending with more of doom feel.  The upcoming full-length will explore more of that doom side of our sound.

Clayton Cagle, guitarist of Bay Area thrash group Hatchet, also contributes a guest solo to “Sickle And Scythe”.

You can purchase Green Death‘s ‘Pure Torture‘ right now at this location. (Digital platform-based releases have been delayed until June 9th).

MARTY FRIEDMAN (Ex-Megadeth) To Release ‘Wall Of Sound’ In August; Song Premiere

Legendary guitar virtuoso Marty Friedman has revealed the details of his next studio release, ‘Wall Of Sound‘, due this August 4th from Prosthetic Records. Produced by Friedman, engineered by Paul Fig (Ghost, Rush, Alice In Chains) and mixed by Jens Bogren (Kreator, Sepultura, Opeth), the disc “expands and destroys any conventional notions of instrumental music,” according to a press release. Two particular tracks, ‘Streetlight‘ and ‘For A Friend‘, were specially mixed by guest contributor, the famed producer for Queen, Mack. The song “Self Pollution” can be streamed below.

All “Wall Of Sound” preorders come with a laminate good for one VIP meet-and-greet to Marty’s 2017 U.S. tour. **Please note** this is not a ticket to the show.

Like its predecessor Inferno, Wall Of Sound will host several guest performers including prog-thrashers Mutoid Man, Jørgen Munkeby of the Norwegian avant-garde jazz-metal outfit Shining and Jinxx of Los Angeles theatrical rockers Black Veil Brides.

Marty commented on several aspects of the new album saying: “This time it’s even more ambitious than that album was, a bit more dense, and, with any luck, more exciting for those of you who will hear it.”

He added: “There will be elevent or twelve songs in total. Sometimes a song you really love doesn’t make it to the album because it doesn’t fit nicely in the sequencing. Either way, we’re pushing sixty minutes, so it won’t be a short album.”

Regarding how the collaboration with Jinxx came about, Friedman told Guitar World: “I’m a big fan of Jinxx and Black Veil Brides. He came to my show in L.A. in 2015. Right after that, I was told that he plays violin. I didn’t even know that! Then light bulbs went off. I thought now’s the chance to really turn some heads by doing something that’s a little bit, well, a lot, unexpected to my fans and his fans.”

ACCEPT Proclaim Details For ‘The Rise Of Chaos’

Tuetonic titans of tumultuous thrash metal, Germany’s Accept, will return with their fourth outing for Nuclear Blast Records on August 4th. Titled ‘The Rise Of Chaos‘, will continue the tradition of its most recent three predecessors – Blood Of The Nations, Stalingrad, and Blind Rage – with grandeur and precision. The longrunning, legendary band seem to only be getting better and better with the passage of time and it is safe to say the new album will bolster that fact.

Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann comments: “The Rise Of Chaos is something I have been thinking about often. Wherever we go – there is some hidden as well as some visible destruction and it kind of changes the world we know. What was there today – can be gone tomorrow and it’s somehow irritating, because it happens on so many levels and no one knows what comes next. The cover is our last stage set – but now clearly “destroyed” – like… after a catastrophe”

The Rise Of Chaos tracklisting:

“Die By The Sword”
“Hole In The Head”
“The Rise Of Chaos”
“Koolaid”
“No Regrets”
“Analog Man”
“What’s Done Is Done”
“Worlds Colliding”
“Carry The Weight”
“Race To Extinction”

And if this wasn’t enough, Accept will celebrate the album’s live premiere exclusively on August 3rd, on the day before its release, as a part of a special show at Wacken Open Air, Germany.

BLACK PUSSY ‘Power’ Review, Full Stream & Official Videos

BLACK PUSSY
Power – CD//DD//LP
Made In China Records – Release Date: May 30th, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

May 30th saw the return of the brilliantly named Black Pussy with their third studio outing, ‘Power‘, via Made In China Records. Despite all the controversy, protests and cancelled shows, this fantastic band perseveres and puts the power of Black Pussy in your face yet again. Dustin Hill, Ryan McIntire, Dean Carroll, Aaron Poplin, and Keith O’Dell return with another fine outing melding Seventies era rock greatness with peace, love and harmonious vibes. With the usual, ever-present happy-go-lucky demeanor to their music, it is clear that Black Pussy has crafted another grandiose effort of unfettered arena rock with ‘Power‘.

All the enthralling elements of the band’s earlier efforts are here, from the ripples of electronic psychedelia to atmospheric instrumentation. Addictive, opiate-like guitar riff-driven grooves, boogie-worthy rhythms and drumming that serves like a generator to power it all. Super smooth vocal deliveries chock full of lyrical innuendo with double, and sometimes triple, entendres in meaning. For me, Black Pussy has always been about their fantastically polished sound, shiny, somewhat pop-heavy musical output and all else be damned, feel good rock and roll.

Make no mistake, that is exactly what you get with the band, their thrilling music or a magical live performance. There are continual high points on Power, one of them arrives immediately with the first actual song (after a brief instrumental intro), ‘Take You There‘. Positivity is personified in the sexually-charged ‘Slice Of Paradise‘ while there are ample Alternative Rock overtones to tracks like ‘Parasols‘ and ‘Indians‘. And do I really need to break down the matter-as fact ‘I Wanna Get High‘ which has a tell-all running time of 4:20? No, I didn’t think so as the band has never shied away from the fact that they love smoking pot, ha!

For my tastes and me personally, my favorite part of the album is the mid-point, back to back tracks ‘Home Sweet Home‘ and ‘Full Tilt Boogie‘. The first a fantastic ode to the seeming joys of hooking up and home ownership, one with somewhat QoTSA-ish moments in the music. Undoubtedy unintentional but I love the song ‘Full Tilt Boogie‘ with its The Cars-meets-T.Rex sounding content. This is definitely my favorite cut, a simmering, smoothly grooving slow cooker where amazing music, mantra-worthy lyrics and cosmic vocals align. I especially like the later vocalizations with Dustin and a female engaging in a bit of back and forth.

The ‘Power‘ of Black Pussy compels you to rock out with the abundant, feel-good attitude in their music. It invites you to enter under your own volition and join the love-in, partake of substances and lose your preconceived, engrained social mores. It’s like the Seventies all over again with sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll…fuck the SJW fascists and their moronic bullshit over names and such. This is about the music, about getting high and having fun..making love, not war!
