Serbian Gothic Doomers THE FATHER OF SERPENTS To Release New Album; Video Premiere

Serbian gothic doom/atmospheric death metallers The Father Of Serpents are set to release their new full-length album Age Of Damnation in a few days. Inspired by the likes of Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Moonspell and more, the sextet have a very textured, organically appealing heaviness. You can hear, and visualize it, for yourself via their new music video for “Viral”.

“’Viral’ was the last song we did before recording the album in the studio, just a few days before,” The Father Of Serpents comment. “It was almost done in 15 minutes and it went pretty natural and straightforward. We didn’t have the time to overthought or analyze the song, so the energy of the moment when we were jamming the song is there. It is both groovy, catchy and dark.”

Age Of Damnation will be released on June 19 through Satanath Records and United By Chaos. Pre-order it here.

BARONESS Shares Rehearsal Videos With New Guitarist

Just days after announcing their amicable split with guitarist Pete Adams here, progressive metallers Baroness have given us a proper introduction to their newest member, Gina Gleason. That introduction to the new guitarist is being made via two rehearsal room video clips for the songs ‘Chlorine And Wine‘ and ‘Morningstar‘. It goes without saying that Gina is, or must be, an incredibly talented player to have so readily stepped into the Baroness spotlight at this time. Plus, she is also adding a new element to the beloved act…female vocal parts. The band’s well respected, revered status within the metal/music community is enough to put the sensation of pressure on anyone but she seems to be right at home in the insightful peeks below. Judge for yourself…

PYRESHIP ‘The Liars Bend Low’ Review & Full LP Stream

PYRESHIP
The Liars Bend Low – DD//Ltd. Ed. LP
Black Bow Records – Release Date: May 26th, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

Every so often a time-specific item comes along, something that is ideal and fitting for that sole moment, at that very point with all that is transpiring. It can be anything of course, a statement, a movement or hell, perhaps even a musical movement that makes a statement. I believe the latter option is happening as I write this, as the Houston, Texas-based prog metal unit Pyreship release their debut ‘The Liars Bend Low‘. The 5-song offering will be unleashed via digital format and limited edition vinyl via Black Bow Records today, Friday, May 26th.

In an age where mediocrity and the most seemingly mundane noise is hailed as great music and talentless hacks hailed as “brilliant”, this release comes. It comes at just the right time too, right when we need it most for it contains a much larger scope and impact when effectually dissected. Thanks to guitarist/vox Cru Jordan Jones, guitarist/ vox Sam Waters, bassist George Ellis Lusito and drummer Steve Smith, the quartet has given us quite the profound album here. One that is comprised of progressive, forward-moving Post-Metal and massive Noise Rock qualities yet those qualities are taken much, much further into the fray.

Things begin with a melodic introduction and build up in the first song of the five, ‘Gravity‘ but soon enough it implodes. Massive, bulky riffs drive the song’s advance while rhythmic pulsations pump and plod beneath as the guys find the groove and initiate the ride along it. Ever chugging onward, while somewhat stripped down, angst-y vocals find their way into the verses and then merge harmoniously in the choruses. Outstanding drum work powers the backline within the track, at points it is isolated and becomes the focal point of the song. Using samples and spoken word inserts to serve as a type or narrative to much of the record, the famous one from Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator delivers us to the fantastic ‘Machine Men‘. You nearly assume this will be an instrumental track due to the abundance of jamming jam-packed into it but alas, vocals gradually appear. They become one of the really interesting elements of this track too, the present multiple layers of them, how they divide and unite at differing marks.

With ‘When Leaves Turn To Blood‘ we take a thrilling detour into some hazy, heady psychedelia right from the start. Rhythmic, hypnotically cadenced drums power things like some silken locomotive, simultaneously airy and heavy both before the vocals enter. They too are rendered with atmospheric effects as the track soon seems to float along its way…that is until the guitars surface. Thick riffs churn intermittently with resonating licks, everything merging into a flurry of controlled chaos, the quiet cool if you will. The lysergic nuances up to this point find their full footing in the fourth song, ‘Die-Sect‘, my favorite song. Emotionally scarred vocals crackle before some heavy handed guitars, bottom end-bleeding bass lines and thundering drums find their unified way into the mix. Building upward, tumbling downward, spiraling sonics encircle you, spinning and whirling about your head. This continues in intensity and segmented severity through paced application through much of the cut and up to its finish. Besides, any song that hosts a quote/sample from a David Lynch production is always boss in my book!

A Martin Luther King, Jr. sample provides an eerie intro to the final track ‘…Are We Dead Yet‘ before it unfurls itself as perhaps the heaviest song of this debut. Or so you think as the fantastic swagger of the guitars resonate and the tightly wound, in-the-pocket rhythm section navigates some respectable realms. Aggressive, mostly shouted vocals bellow throughout as well, all of which combined result in a magnificent song that ends an equally monumental album itself. It’s definitely one that you need to hear immediately via the Soundcloud stream below and from there, go purchase!

KHEMMIS Share Decibel Mag’s Exclusive Flexi-Single Track

Colorado progressive doomers Khemmis have returned with their new exclusive single for Decibel Magazine‘s ongoing Flexi-Disc series. The song, ‘Empty Throne‘, was recorded back in February exclusively for the popular offering. Of course it has only been a few short months since the Denver doomsters Khemmis topped Decibel‘s 2016 Album Of The Year list with their second LP, Hunted. And it’s only been a few short weeks since they owned the big stage with the majority of that record at the first annual Decibel Metal & Beer Fest. Enjoy!

DIVINITY Stream ‘The Immortalist’ In Its Entirety

I’ll be honest, when I read that a band is getting musical comparisons to acts like Soilwork and Extol then that will be plenty enough to convince me to at least check them out. The Calgary, AB progressive death metal band Divinity are getting those types of comparisons out in the music world and deservedly so. If I could add one of my own to the list it would be Strapping Young Lad and not because of the Canuck connection but because Divinity genuinely display some very SYL-ish moments in their music. Having never heard Divinity until recently, I was not fully prepared for the great musical content of their latest recorded offering, ‘The Immortalist‘, nor did I know the story of the music either.

See, The Immortalist (which will be released this Friday, May 26th) is the culmination of five long years of hard work and determination from Divinity. The album features 12 tracks that include their two previous EP releases “The Immortalist, Pt. 1 – Awestruck” and “The Immortalist, Pt. 2 –Momentum” with their 3rd EP “The Immortalist Pt. 3 – Conqueror” now completed to finish off the trilogy series as one huge full length album. All the tracks on the album are re-mixed and re-mastered by the talented Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Grid Productions) to make the songs more cohesive and work as a full-length experience. Plus, the song ‘D.M.T.‘ features a guest appearance from Soilwork/Night Flight Orchestra’s BjornSpeedStrid.

The band commented on their upcoming effort saying: “We’re very proud of our new album! Our dedication to song writing, recording and producing these 12 songs over the past 5 years has been a crazy musical journey and a huge learning experience that we will never forget. Our lyrical content and artwork is based on an original science-fiction concept story about a character who wakes up in a random field within an intricate crop circle with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The character is then thrown into a crazy adventure and eventually learns who he is and how to become immortal. There’s so much more to the story but we don’t want to give it all way just yet.”

Today, Taste Nation LLC is giving you the opportunity to stream Divinity‘s ‘The Imortalist‘ in its entirety below. Pre-order of the album is available on Divinity.ca, iTunes or Amazon plus an exclusive digi-pak CD available on their website for those who like to support the band directly. The digi-pak CD contains a 24-page booklet that showcases this entire concept giving fans way a full physical experience to the story, songs, lyrics, and visual aspect of the new album. Enjoy!

L’IRA DEL BACCANO “PARADOX – HOURGLASS” Album Review & Stream…

L’IRA DEL BACCANO

PARADOX – HOURGLASS – Vinyl // CD // DD

Subsound Records – Released March 2017

Reviewed by Terry “The Ancient One” Cuyler

Hello all!! I’m back from one of my many epic quests through cyberspace in search of all that rocks ‘n’ rolls. Recently I’ve been listening to allot of  Greek, Spanish and Italian rock which seems to come in many varieties from a bustling underground rock scene which I will write an article about at some later date. Right now I’d like to tell you about: Alessandro “Drughito” Santori,  Roberto Malerba, Sandro “fred” Salvi, and Ivan Contini Bacchisio – a self described Doomdelic Instrumental Rock Quartet from Rome called L’ira Del Baccano.

Live Band Shot

Formed in 1998 as LOOSIN’o’FREQUENCIES, the band decided to reform itself as a purely instrumental act in 2007 as L’ira Del Baccano. The change in name and what they chose to play turned out to be a real shot in the arm band. In a conversation with  Alessandro the bands guitarist I learned the band was not even thinking actively touring and had no idea how big of an influence the internet would be for them until they recorded their first gig in 3 years and put it up as a free download and found they had generated a buzz.

After releasing two albums, and a split album with Watermelon Time, L’ira Del Baccano has released a third album Paradox – Hourglass on Subsound Records. I’ve listened to this album both actively and inactively and what I enjoy most about it is the musics mercurial nature. Opening with “Paradox Hourglass-Part I” the album begins simply enough with a rolling guitar riff that transforms into an 11-minute psychedelic jam then again transforms into something that sounds not like but akin to Carlos Santana jamming with Geezer in ‘Paradox Hourglass-Part II’.

After getting me hooked with the 1st two songs comes a bluesy heavy psych song called ‘Abilene’, followed by my favorite track with it’s Doomaphonic sound ‘Blind Phoenix Rising’. In just four songs Paradox – Hourglass takes you on a journey outside of space and time and into the spirit realm with L’ira Del Baccano’s blend of heavy, psychedelic, and progressive music.  If L’ira Del Baccano continues making albums like Paradox-Hourglass I can easily see them developing a cult following like the Grateful Dead and playing for years.

L’ira Del Baccano is:

Alessandro “Drughito” Santori – guitar/direction and architecture of Baccano
Roberto Malerba – guitar/synth
Sandro “fred” Salvi – drums
Ivan Contini Bacchisio – bass

IAMFIRE ‘From Ashes’ Review & Stream

IAMFIRE
From Ashes – CD//DD//Vinyl
Released April 14th, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Peter Dolving fan..from Mary Beats Jane to his time in The Haunted, solo efforts and even his short stint in the recent Dress The Dead project. Peter always provides intense vocals to whatever he’s contributing to and I was excited to learn awhile back there was a new endeavor claiming his presence. That is IAMFIRE of course and where earlier bands explored punk and alternative rock, as well as metal and such, it is safe to say that IAMFIRE is a stoner rock band in about every sense of the words. Joining Dolving in the band are guitarist Peter Ahlers Olsen, bassist/vocalist Mikael Ehlert and drummer Ulf Scott and I make that previous claim based on the variety of styles explored here.

“Here” is the IAMFIRE debut full-length ‘From Ashes‘ of course and what we have here is a potent blend of all the stoner sub-genres from desert to fuzz, doom, psychedelia, sludge and much more. But I almost hesitate to share that labeling due to the possibility that more close-minded types will immediately refuse to give the record a chance. If so then that is their loss, a great, grand loss at that because aside from Peter’s usual falsettos and somewhat wailing vocalizations there is the music. The oh-so fantastic music in this case, music that alternates from densely heavy rock that’s propelled by the power of the riff to the hypnotically melodic tunes administered with a slightly lysergic lull.

It is the former that provides our introduction to the album with ‘Magpies And Crows‘, a cut that unfurls with a riff so huge that it results in opiate-like head nodding. The rhythms are as equally monstrous while the drums detonate about you like bursts of hand grenades. The heavy side of IAMFIRE is on fine display in other superb selections such as ‘Burn Your Halo‘, ‘For What It’s Worth‘ and ‘Compliments‘. Inevitably, there are going to be comparisons made to Tool and perhaps Alice In Chains, derived from nuances within the music and vocals both here. To be honest, those comparisons may be considered absolutely valid too because there are moments where the vocals and progressive elements of the music itself do remind one of Tool.

Did You Find Your Name‘ is one of those songs, one where the box is obliterated and experimental applications govern the track. Dolving himself is the primary source for many of it on this particular cut as he alternates between three differing vocal approaches. Much like flipping an invisible switch with ease, Peter runs across the spectrum from a sedate, light and airy voice to a wailing howl and eventually an aggro-intensified bellow. As for the more proggy styled songs, just give ones like ‘Eyes Wide Open‘ or ‘Beamer‘ a spin and you’ll find yourself outside the norm as well.

That leaves us with my two favorite songs, the one-two impact of the back to back ‘My Mistake‘ and ‘Inside‘. The former is a full-on face down dive into trippy, Kyuss-ian desert rock where sound effects pepper a super fucking cool, fluid track. Hazy, atmospheric hooks sink into your ear canals and embed themselves ever deeper with each note while massive riffs rumble and reverberate. ‘Inside‘ keeps the desert rock vibe alive as it rolls out with a robust, rippling riff ‘n rhythm road map. Tightly-wound, in the pocket drumming and navigating bass lines drive the track ever onward, inviting you deep inside its inner machinations.

Overall, the entire IAMFIRE debut, ‘From Ashes‘, is an album that you can immerse yourself within. An alluring, captivating aural experience that deserves ones undivided listening attention because it is so multifaceted and layered. One misstep on your part and you will quite likely miss an incredible moment taking place on the record so do yourself a favor, stream it below. Ignore the tags, labels, and pigeonholing, my own or anyone else’s and come listen to an amazing album, pure and simple.
