UNCOMMON EVOLUTION ‘Junkyard Jesus’ EP Review & Stream

UNCOMMON EVOLUTION
Junkyard Jesus EP – All Formats
Argonauta Records – Release Date: June 30, 2017
Review By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

From the high end low country of rural Montana comes the next step in the Darwinism advance of heavy rock, Uncommon Evolution and their latest 4 song EP, ‘Junkyard Jesus‘. Due for release this Friday, June 30th from Argonauta Records, this granite-hard slab of stupendous stoner rock is a monstrous movement crammed into a short-playing offering. Not unlike the Uncommon Evolution‘aries neighboring state South Dakota’s National Monument Mt. Rushmore, ‘Junkyard Jesus‘ deserves his very own recognition. Perhaps the residents of Montana might see fit to create their own tribute to their imminent favorite sons, Briar Gillund (vocals/guitar), Matt Niles (drums), Rick Bushnell (bass) and River Riotto (lead guitar).

What this fantastic foursome has carved out on this EP is nothing short of powerful and astounding, as well as energetic and enthralling. With mile-wide fuzzened riffs fueling these four cuts, they slither forward with swagger and surety. Gravity-generating grooves so deep they seem bottomless twist and turn without warning, pulling you along for the ride. All of this begins the very instant that the opening title track begins as “Junkyard Jesus” unfolds the tale of the regal one of refuse, the lord and master of scrappin’ himself, J.J. Rife with bluesy overtones and tightly packed rhythms, the song is an anthemic ode that serves to set things up for what may be my favorite song, the second cut, “Highly Modified Son Of A Bitch“. This slowly simmering scorcher is the kind of song only crafted after lengthy influence from the likes of Clutch, Planet Of Zeus or Wasted Theory. Its intertwining music and vocals yields a beefy number that is impossible to ignore.

The super cool infused sonics continue with the semi-doomish blues of “Feather Short Of Flight” as it alternates between slow jam verses and increasingly more uptempo choruses. Fat bottomed guitars churn and chug it out while the gargantuan, gravelly vocals spin yet another intriguing yarn you will refuse to resist. The subtle synths bubbling beneath the surface of the song at certain points is a damn fine touch too. Things end with the fourth and final track “King Of The Heep“, a furiously quickened cut that rips and tears along with some dizzying drums and outright intensity. The much more effect-heavy vocals are more aggressive, muddied with a seeming bloodthirstiness that works well within the confines of the song itself.

Grit, swagger, balls and burly machismo permeate each fiber and every moment of Uncommon Evolution‘s ‘Junkyard Jesus‘ EP. Still a relatively young band, one that formed in 2013 and has released two prior EPs, this latest effort from the irregular mutations is, simply put, remarkable. It is a fiercely unforgiving salvo of heavily southern-imbued stoner rock awesomeness and it will flat out rock you to your very core. Allow it to do so now via the Soundcloud embedded stream below and then go get this sumbitch this Friday, June 30th on Argonauta Records (purchase here).

GREEN DEATH Drops ‘Pure Torture’ EP; Streams New Song

One of the best rising acts within the underground metal scene is the Des Moines, Iowa-based Green Death. The crossover thrash band’s new EP, Pure Torture, was released yesterday (June 2nd) through longtime Megadeth bassist David Ellefson’s label, EMP Label Group. To celebrate, the band is streaming the EP’s closing track “Sickle & Scythe”.

Vocalist Sol Bates commented on why this particular song was selected to share with fans saying: “‘Sickle & Scythe’ is the darkest song we have written to date. Lyrically it deals with blind faith, cult practices and death. The song is also meant to take the listener on a journey of our musical direction from our past albums to the next full-length album: We start out with more of a thrash style, then the middle/chorus gets into more death metal, ending with more of doom feel.  The upcoming full-length will explore more of that doom side of our sound.

Clayton Cagle, guitarist of Bay Area thrash group Hatchet, also contributes a guest solo to “Sickle And Scythe”.

You can purchase Green Death‘s ‘Pure Torture‘ right now at this location. (Digital platform-based releases have been delayed until June 9th).

PYRESHIP ‘The Liars Bend Low’ Review & Full LP Stream

PYRESHIP
The Liars Bend Low – DD//Ltd. Ed. LP
Black Bow Records – Release Date: May 26th, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

Every so often a time-specific item comes along, something that is ideal and fitting for that sole moment, at that very point with all that is transpiring. It can be anything of course, a statement, a movement or hell, perhaps even a musical movement that makes a statement. I believe the latter option is happening as I write this, as the Houston, Texas-based prog metal unit Pyreship release their debut ‘The Liars Bend Low‘. The 5-song offering will be unleashed via digital format and limited edition vinyl via Black Bow Records today, Friday, May 26th.

In an age where mediocrity and the most seemingly mundane noise is hailed as great music and talentless hacks hailed as “brilliant”, this release comes. It comes at just the right time too, right when we need it most for it contains a much larger scope and impact when effectually dissected. Thanks to guitarist/vox Cru Jordan Jones, guitarist/ vox Sam Waters, bassist George Ellis Lusito and drummer Steve Smith, the quartet has given us quite the profound album here. One that is comprised of progressive, forward-moving Post-Metal and massive Noise Rock qualities yet those qualities are taken much, much further into the fray.

Things begin with a melodic introduction and build up in the first song of the five, ‘Gravity‘ but soon enough it implodes. Massive, bulky riffs drive the song’s advance while rhythmic pulsations pump and plod beneath as the guys find the groove and initiate the ride along it. Ever chugging onward, while somewhat stripped down, angst-y vocals find their way into the verses and then merge harmoniously in the choruses. Outstanding drum work powers the backline within the track, at points it is isolated and becomes the focal point of the song. Using samples and spoken word inserts to serve as a type or narrative to much of the record, the famous one from Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator delivers us to the fantastic ‘Machine Men‘. You nearly assume this will be an instrumental track due to the abundance of jamming jam-packed into it but alas, vocals gradually appear. They become one of the really interesting elements of this track too, the present multiple layers of them, how they divide and unite at differing marks.

With ‘When Leaves Turn To Blood‘ we take a thrilling detour into some hazy, heady psychedelia right from the start. Rhythmic, hypnotically cadenced drums power things like some silken locomotive, simultaneously airy and heavy both before the vocals enter. They too are rendered with atmospheric effects as the track soon seems to float along its way…that is until the guitars surface. Thick riffs churn intermittently with resonating licks, everything merging into a flurry of controlled chaos, the quiet cool if you will. The lysergic nuances up to this point find their full footing in the fourth song, ‘Die-Sect‘, my favorite song. Emotionally scarred vocals crackle before some heavy handed guitars, bottom end-bleeding bass lines and thundering drums find their unified way into the mix. Building upward, tumbling downward, spiraling sonics encircle you, spinning and whirling about your head. This continues in intensity and segmented severity through paced application through much of the cut and up to its finish. Besides, any song that hosts a quote/sample from a David Lynch production is always boss in my book!

A Martin Luther King, Jr. sample provides an eerie intro to the final track ‘…Are We Dead Yet‘ before it unfurls itself as perhaps the heaviest song of this debut. Or so you think as the fantastic swagger of the guitars resonate and the tightly wound, in-the-pocket rhythm section navigates some respectable realms. Aggressive, mostly shouted vocals bellow throughout as well, all of which combined result in a magnificent song that ends an equally monumental album itself. It’s definitely one that you need to hear immediately via the Soundcloud stream below and from there, go purchase!

SUMMONER Streaming ‘Beyond The Realm Of Light’

Boston’s heavy rock collective known as Summoner recently released their third studio recording, Beyond The Realm Of Light, via Magnetic Eye Records. The follow-up to 2013’s Atlantian and 2012’s Phoenix finds the band further exploring the intricacies of melodic, riff-driven progressive rock music. There is a swaggering sense of purpose and clearly defined intent with this latest outing, one that guitarist AJ Peters commented on saying:

With Beyond The Realm Of Light we wanted a more sharply focused, hard hitting album while still exploring the thoughtful lyrical concepts and melodic voice of our past efforts. Our statement on the path humanity has taken and what lies ahead.

Today, Taste Nation LLC is streaming the latest album from Summoner, Beyond The Realm Of Light, in its entirety below. It is out now and available for purchase here.

Argonauta Records’ DRIVE BY WIRE Stream ‘The Whole Shebang’

From the heart of Deventer, Netherlands comes the latest studio offering from the hazily fuzzened foursome Drive By Wire, ‘The Whole Shebang‘. Issued just yesterday (May 19th) through Argonauta Records comes this heady, wholesome opus of psychedelia-laden Desert/Stoner Rock. It’s one that is made that much more the powerful thanks to the full-on sultriness of singer Simone Holsbeek. Her vocals, merged with the magnificent musicality provided by Alwin Wubben, Jerome Miedendorp de Bie, Marcel Zerb and Rene Rutten, make this a record that is impossible to ignore.

DBW

Drive By Wire manages to distill their inspirations and influences into a warmly organic sound, but one with the urgency and dynamics of 90′s grunge (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains), the sensuality of PJ Harvey and the deliciously heavy psychedelic fuzz grooves of all the great 70′s bands. I am pretty confident in saying that once you start this album to playing, you won’t be able to turn itoff until the last song wraps up…and even then you will probably be inclined to hit Repeat again.

See if what I’m saying is true by giving Drive By Wire‘s ‘The Whole Shebang‘ a precursory spin via the Soundcloud embed below. In the meantime, don’t forget, the album is out right now from Argonauta Records!

MERCHANT ‘Beneath’ EP Review & Stream

MERCHANT
Beneath – CD//DD
Black Bow Records – Released May 12, 2017
Reviewed By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker

Black Bow Records is the label started by Conan’s Jon Paul Davis and it just released the 2-song ‘Beneath‘ from Australia’s Merchant last Friday, May 12th. It was just little over a year ago that Merchant came crashing on to the heavy music scene with their four-song debut, Suzerain. Now, vocalist Mirgy, guitarist Ben, bassist/vox Wilson and drummer Nick are back with another brutish boulder of harrowing heaviness.

The slowly unfolding first moments of ‘Guile As A Vice‘ are somewhat sedate as a fuzzy riff reverberates and plodding drums render periodic, perfectly timed strikes. Soon a pattern begins to form and from that pattern, a rhythmic roadmap comes into sight..and sound. Equally melodic and epic, things build and circulate, almost reaching a drone like point before gravelly vocals finely enter the mix. Harshly acidic, they herald a tale told from what sounds like pure vocal chord shredding severity amid semi-psyche infused atmospherics of utter dread. At over fourteen and a half minutes running time, there is a lot of transcendental sludge to be explored here for sure.

Second cut ‘Succumbing‘ is instantly more uptempo yet no less savagely brutal and battering. Taking a cue from peers like Neurosis and Yob, the track’s flurry of circulatory rhythmic pulses pull you under. The vocals undergo a turn toward a much more sinister state than the previous track while the hellish audio bog beats you into submission. Another long-player, the song maintains a constant, fevered inferno of activity on varied levels and refuses to let up for the most part. A bit of haziness seeps forth at one point as things begin to pull back in intensity, gradually getting a bit more and more minimalist. That throttling down continues and soon gives way to a cacophony of feedback and dissonance before relinquishing its hold upon your throat.

What strides Merchant has made since their critically acclaimed release last year are more than evident on the new EP, ‘Beneath‘. The sludgier vibes are prevalent and punishing of course with one of the most noticeable differences here is the change in the vocals. I am sure this newly released beatdown of blackened bereavement shall leave no listener unscathed. You can now stream it for yourself via the Soundcloud embed below if you dare.
